Simple: An adjective meaning easy to understand, deal with, use, etc. or not complicated.
I've noticed in the past few years that people will choose one word to focus and center the upcoming year on. I've never done this in the past, but as I thought more about the blog and the direction that I want to go, I decided to pick a word for 2016. I wanted a word that I could center my personal life around and also a word that I thought would help you, my readers. So 2016 is going to be all about simple.
I have several areas of my life that I want to simplify.
I abhor physical clutter, but I still have let my house gather more items than I would like. My house being messy and full of stuff actually feels paralyzing to me. I liken it best to the scene from Moms' Night Out where Allyson is hiding in the closet from "the house" because its a mess. Sometimes I wish I could sell everything that I didn't love and start fresh, but then we wouldn't have stools at our counter or a table to eat on or sofas to sit on...so simplifying and creating a home I love will be a process (and one that will probably take more than a year).
I also want to simplify my routines. I'm almost one year into this stay-at-home mom thing, and I have yet to really feel like I've nailed down a routine. I need create habits and routines to make things as simple and smooth as possible. I'm also going to be on the lookout for products that save me time and money in different areas including my beauty routine and organization.
I want to simplify our eating. We don't eat a lot of processed or out-of-a-box food for meals, but most of our snacks are processed (chips, Cheez-Its, etc.) and we like cheese...a lot. I also love my Mountain Dew. I no longer keep it at the house, but I do drink it more than I should. The plan is to make the garden bigger in 2016, so I hope to increase our veggie intake that way. I'm also planning to take more time to make snacks and meals ahead with real ingredients so that we won't be tempted by the ease of processed food.
You may be thinking, "that's all great, Erika, but those three things aren't that big of a deal." And you would be right. So why did I choose simple as my word for 2016?
I choose simple because "My name is Erika and I like stuff." I also fall into the comparison trap CONSTANTLY, and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of feeling sad or stressed because my life doesn't look like so-and-so's or because I'm not living the life I really want to be living. I want to simplify all of the noise and clutter so that I can focus and live with intention. I want to make memories with my kids and husband and make room in my life to learn new things and cultivate amazing relationships. I want to stop being paralyzed by the stress of the unnecessary, so that I have the energy and concentration to create the life I really want for myself and my family.
What can you expect in the coming year? I already have a few things lined up to focus on changing these first few months. I will give you insight each month in what area I will be working on and I will also give you tips and the resources I'll be using. I already have an amazing reading list lined up for the year to help me gain insight into how to live with simplicity and intention as well.
Don't worry, there will still be recipe and farm posts and I'll continue give you my Hand-Picked Peach each week!
